Welcome to the homepage of the Delegation of the European Union to Iceland.

The EU enjoys good and broad relationship with Iceland. The Agreement on the European Economic Area is at the core of our relations. According to the Agreement, Iceland participates fully in the EU Internal Market, establishing free movement of goods, capital, services and people with the sole exception of the fishery and the agricultural sectors.

In addition, Iceland is an associated member of the Schengen Agreement, allowing for travel without a passport within the Schengen area, involving 25 European countries. Furthermore, Iceland participate in Europol, several European agencies and in a large number of cooperation programmes.

It is clear that after the decision to apply for membership in the EU, Icelanders will follow with growing interest the ensuing process. I believe it is of high significance that the Icelandic public can follow developments in the EU, regardless of views on the membership issue itself. It is therefore essential for this Delegation to provide regular, genuine and precise information about the European Union to the Icelandic public. This is why we are ready and willing to give presentations and receive groups here at the Delegation. This is why we put forward the present website.

Í janúar 2010 var sendinefnd ESB fyrir Ísland aðskilin frá fastanefnd ESB gagnvart Noregi og Íslandi með aðsetur í Osló. Sendinefndin er fulltrúi ESB gagnvart stjórnvöldum á Íslandi og miðlar upplýsingum til höfuðstöðva ESB í Brussel um afstöðu og hagsmuni Íslands í málum sem snerta samstarf Íslands og ESB. Hlutverk sendinefndarinnar er einng að veita íslenskum almenningi, fjölmiðlum og öðrum, upplýsingar um uppbyggingu og starfsemi ESB. Evrópusambandið rekur sendinefndir í um 130 ríkjum utan sambandsins.
